Coleman Library Reading
I recently read my book The Sun Jumped Over the Moon at the Coleman, MI library. A tiny town 20 minutes north from me. The daycare across the street from the library walked all the children over to the library for the reading. As they all marched in single file, I noticed they all looked very young. I was told they were all four-year-olds. All were such cute little peanuts and were so excited to be there. However, the book is written for 5–8-year-olds, I was a little concerned about this reading. Would these children be able to follow along? Would they be able to participate in the activities that are part of the reading? Would they comprehend the theme of the book about friends helping friends? Oh Boy! Worst case scenario, I would just read the book and go straight to the coloring book pages I brought of each character in the book.
As soon as I sat on the rocking chair with the book in my hands, all these little humans sat criss crossed apple sauce on the floor filling up the space all around me. No one made a sound, all eyes looking straight up at me waiting to begin. To my delightful surprise, they were totally engaged in the story. They were able to follow along and do all the activities during the reading. They smiled and cheered at the right moments. They showed and verbalized concern when the Sun was in trouble. They were excited to share their personal stories about helping friends and getting help from friends! Never underestimate the brain power of children of any age.
The most exciting part of the experience is when they were able to pick out their favorite character from the coloring pages, they all wanted to color all the characters and couldn’t wait to take them home to show their parents.
It was a fun filled book reading.
